About Red Cross

Australian Red Cross (ARC), commonly known as Red Cross, is one of Australia’s most recognised non-profit humanitarian aid and charity organisations. Established in 1914, Red Cross is, for the greater part, volunteer-led and extends support to Aussies in need. It provides disaster relief services, community services such as homeless assistance, blood donation, refugee support programs and more.

Red Cross also operates a network of 162 red cross op shops and 19 branch-operated stores where one can purchase pre-loved items at reasonable prices. The stores depend on donations from the public, and any profits generated go towards supporting Red Cross programs.

What items does Red Cross accept for donation?

Unlike some other charity organisations, Red Cross mostly accepts clothing and smaller items for donations. As all donated items are resold at the store, Red Cross only accepts items in usable condition. As a rule of thumb, if you would buy it for yourself, then it is suitable for donation.

Items accepted by Red Cross stores:

• Clothing, Shoes, Belts and Jewellery (Men, Women & Children)
• Books, CDs and DVDs
• Homewares

Items not suitable for donation:

• Stained, ripped or torn clothing
• Innerwear
• Furniture, electricals, Mattresses and large items
• Beauty and hygiene products
• Baby items like cots, car seats etc.
• Used kitchenware
• White goods such as refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers
• Knives, firearms and weapons

You can drop your donations in the charity bins available inside all Red Cross stores. The bins are usually white with a red colour Red cross logo in front. Do not leave donations outside the bins or outside the store, as they might be stolen or damaged.

Also, Red Cross must pay to dispose of non-sellable items, so please donate responsibly.

Red Cross Opening Hours & Days:

The opening hours are different for each store. You can check the store opening hours by selecting the specific location above. Major Red Cross store locations are generally open from 9 am to 4 pm throughout the week. Some stores are closed on Sundays.

What does Red Cross do with the donated items?

The donated items are sorted and sold at Red Cross stores in Australia. Proceeds generated from the sale of these items are used to fund Red Cross programs and teams in Australia and the Asia Pacific.
