Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) or better known as the Brotherhood, is an Australian social justice not-for-profit organisation that works towards inequality and alleviating poverty. Founded in 1930, the BSL has a long track record of using research-led initiatives to develop practical initiatives and working alongside government councils and organisations to bring about social change.
Like some other charities, the Brother of St Laurence operates several op shops to help raise funds for its initiatives and spread awareness about its programs. However, BSL op shops are limited in and around Melbourne.
The op shops also double up as a front to accept donations from the public. Clothing bins are conveniently placed outside the op shop, while the larger items need to be dropped in-store. Currently, BSL operates 21 op shops and drop-off points.
BSL accepts a wide range of items as long as they’re in good and sellable condition.
You can donate:
Items that aren’t working, have missing parts or are not working are not accepted. If you’re unsure if your item can be donated, please get in touch with the local store or reach out to 1300 DONATE (1300 366 283) or email [email protected].
Donations are limited to op shop opening hours and days, which vary from location to location. You can find the exact opening hours of your local op shop using the locator tool above. Most Brotherhood of St Laurence op shops and drop-off points generally operate from 9:30 am – 5 pm, Monday to Saturday. Sunday is usually closed.
Donated items are sorted and shelved in the store for sale. The profits from the sale are funnelled into the BSL programs and initiatives. Any unsold items are donated to other charities, given directly to people in need or recycled.
