With about 367,752 people calling Canberra home, our nation’s capital has the opportunity to lead the charge in eliminating textile waste. And there’s certainly no shortage of charity donation bins in and around the ACT. You’ll find these bins in some of the below areas and beyond:
We can work together and live more sustainably by reusing and sharing items before recycling or throwing them away. Donating your preloved and secondhand items prolongs their life and keeps them out of landfills, helping to promote sustainability. Additionally, your charity bin donations are resold in op shops at a reduced price, as they’re no longer brand new. This benefits the community by getting affordable, lightly used items into the homes of those in need, while the proceeds go back to the charities themselves. Whether you donate at a Vinnies, Salvos, Anglicare, or another charity donation bin, rest assured that your donation will go a long way toward helping those in the ACT.
Donation requirements vary from organisation to organisation. Find your preferred donation bin on the map above for a list of accepted items. In general, most organisations accept clothing, shoes, books, and toys that are in good condition and fit inside the donation bin. Some organisations may accept items like accessories, jewellery, kitchenware, towels, artwork, and more. If you can’t find a particular item by clicking on a donation bin above, it’s best to call the op shop directly for more details.
They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, but no rubbish belongs in the donation bin. Remember, your donations are taken straight from the donation bin and into the op shop for resale. To ensure your items are ready to be sold, check that they are clean, undamaged, and in
working order before donating. If it’s unusable (stained, broken, missing pieces), it’s unsellable, and charity organisations are responsible for the disposal costs of these damaged items.
When making your donation, always leave items inside the bin. Leaving items outside of the bin could result in a fine for illegal dumping. Perhaps worse, the charities bear the financial burden of removing any items left outside of the donation bins, which unfortunately cancels out any well-intended donations.
